The building before it was a theater was originally built as a Presbyterian church, the original forming congregation consisted of 8 members which was formed in 1881 or 1891 the history on it varies from one historian to the next. Original construction on the building began in 1892 by it was finished in the month of Janurary in 1893 for a cost of $1,200, by that year the congregation had esculated to 35 members. The church had several financial troubles from beginning and off and on till the end resulting in at times Reverands not being fully paid for their services, and as well as the original builder not being fully compensated. At this time it is unknown when the church ended services it is likely somewhere in the time frame of the 1950's-1960's, more research will be done to authenticate our findings.
In the early 1970's the building and land was donated to the Town of La Veta for use by the Ft. Fransico Museum located ajacent next door, by 1976 the building had been aquired for use by the Spoon River Players for use in theater productions, the land and building are still owned by the Town and the current Theater board has a lease with the Town to use the building.
Reported haunted activity in the building range from visual anomolys, dis-embodied vocies, moving objects, creepy feelings, and even destruction of a stage prop has been reported. More research and investigations are planned as we continue to learn more into the case.
